You do not need fancy software to keep better shrimp. A simple notebook, or a note on your phone, can turn guesswork into learning. A colony logbook shows you what is working and warns you early when something is off.
What to Record
Start with the basics: date, water test results, temperature, and any water changes. Add notes about feeding, new additions, and visible behavior. A short line is enough, so long as you do it consistently.
Track Population and Breeding
Note when you see berried females, new babies, or notable color shifts. A rough count every month or so tells you whether the colony is growing. If growth stalls, your log will help you look back for the cause.
Spot Trends Early
A single test result tells you little, but a series of results tells a story. Slowly rising nitrate or creeping hardness shows up on paper long before shrimp react. Early warnings let you make small fixes rather than big rescues.
Document Changes
Write down every change you make, including new products, equipment swaps, and adjustments to lighting. When something goes wrong, you can look back and find the likely cause. It beats trying to remember what you did three weeks ago.
Add Photos
Occasional photos create a beautiful record of your tank’s growth. They also help you compare color, size, and plant development over time. Keep them in an album or folder with the date.
Keep It Simple
The best logbook is the one you actually use. A weekly check with a few bullet points is plenty. Do not let the system become a chore.
Share Your Log for Better Advice
When you ask other keepers for help, a few lines from your log answer the questions they will ask: what you tested, what changed, and when. Advice becomes sharper when it starts from facts. Sharing your notes can also help others learn from your tank.
Choose a Format You Like
A paper notebook, a spreadsheet, or a notes app all work well. Pick the one you will open most often, and keep it near the tank or on your phone. Consistency matters more than style.
Learn, Adjust, Enjoy
Over months, your notes become a personal guide to your tank. They also make it easy to explain your setup when you ask other hobbyists for advice. When you are ready to expand, look through our shrimp for sale and add another chapter to your log.
